In this episode of Greasy Nurse Garage, the Greasy Nurse tackles sloppy steering on his LS3-swapped 1985 El Camino by replacing the worn factory steering box with a used close-ratio steering box from a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ), picked up for just $60 at a local Pick-N-Pull.
The project involves removing the old steering box, cleaning and preparing the replacement, modifying the power steering pump to reduce excessive pressure, and fabricating custom PTFE power steering hoses with AN fittings. Along the way, forgotten tools, stubborn components, fluid spills, and a few questionable decisions provide plenty of laughs and classic garage shenanigans.
After getting everything installed, flushing the system, and filling it with synthetic power steering fluid, the moment of truth arrives. The results are impressive: the El Camino's steering feels significantly tighter, more responsive, and much easier to control at highway speeds.
Join the Greasy Nurse as he proves that a little wrench therapy, some budget-friendly parts, and a willingness to learn from mistakes can make a world of difference—all while keeping the humor flowing and the project affordable.
