On May 28, 2025, the Birch Glacier above the Swiss village of Blatten broke away from the mountain. More than 9 million cubic meters of ice and rock thundered into the Lötschental valley and buried around 90% of the village in minutes — the church, the chalets, centuries of history. Yet the village was almost empty. Nine days earlier, scientists watching the crumbling Kleines Nesthorn and a strangely advancing glacier had raised the alarm, and all 300 residents were ordered out within two hours. In this video we follow the full hazard cascade: a mountain falling apart, a glacier that grew while every other glacier in Switzerland melted, a collapse unprecedented in the Swiss Alps, and the dammed lake that threatened a second disaster. And we ask what Blatten tells us about the future of glaciers, permafrost and the people living beneath them.
