We Tried to Cross the Pyrenees… Then Everything Fell Apart

After 7 days and hundreds of miles riding from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, we finally reached the ocean… but the adventure wasn’t over. After two days of rest, we set off on our next challenge — the Raid Pyrénéen, a brutal 465-mile route across the Pyrenees. We knew it would be tough. What we hadn’t fully appreciated was just how much the previous week had already taken out of us. August brought a relentless heatwave, with temperatures regularly pushing into the high 30s and reaching around 40°C. Add in long days in the saddle, poor sleep, limited recovery and the relentless climbing of the Pyrenees, and the fatigue began to build. Then came the Col d’Aubisque. What should have been another epic climb became the point where everything finally caught up with us. The heat, exhaustion and lack of recovery pushed us beyond what we could sustain, and eventually we had to make the decision to abandon the Raid Pyrénéen and find another way out. This isn't the ending we planned. But cycling adventures don't always go to plan — and sometimes the biggest challenge is knowing when you've reached your limit.
