This video tells the entire story of Soldier Boy from The Boys, Vought's first superhero, covering his comic book origins, his staged Normandy landing, his team Payback, and the 1984 Nicaragua mission.
The video follows Soldier Boy through both the original comic by Garth Ennis and John McCrea and the Amazon series. It explains how Vought built him as a propaganda product, invented his origin story and kept him out of real combat. It examines how he abused the members of Payback and compares him with the real wartime superhero propaganda he parodies. It then follows the events that led to his fall.
What's covered in this video
In the Dynamite Entertainment comic, Soldier Boy is a legacy codename and a parody of Marvel's Captain America whose Avenging Squad causes a massacre during the Battle of the Bulge.
In the comic, the mortally wounded Soldier Boy is given a mercy killing by Mallory, who uses a Nazi grenade.
In the Amazon series, he is Ben, born in South Philadelphia in 1919, and Vought markets him with an invented story of a poor childhood to hide Compound V.
In season 3, episode 5, The Legend, played by Paul Reiser, reveals that the Normandy landing was filmed about two weeks after D-Day.
A 1984 in-universe public service announcement starring Jensen Ackles parodies the Reagan-era Just Say No campaign.
Costume designers Laura Jean Shannon and Greg Hopwood combined soldier, cowboy and national imagery, with an eagle emblem, a gold star and a shield that blocks bullets.
The Payback roster includes Crimson Countess, Gunpowder, Mindstorm, Swatto, the TNT Twins and Black Noir.
In season 3, episode 7, Soldier Boy abuses his team and beats Black Noir after sabotaging his casting in Beverly Hills Cop with producer Don Simpson.
Payback is sent on Operation Charly to help the CIA fight Soviet-backed Nicaraguan forces.
Real propaganda history includes Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Captain America punching Hitler, Martin Goodman's Timely Comics, war bond drives and the 1942 Superman radio serial.
A season 3, episode 2 newsreel shows Soldier Boy testifying before the House Un-American Activities Committee and posing with Ronald Reagan, and Ackles describes the character as a portrait of toxic masculinity.
Later parts cover Frederick Vought secretly giving the first dose to his own wife and the Boys traveling to Russia for the weapon that stopped Soldier Boy.
