What does it really mean to lead authentically? In this episode of Off The Syllabus, Dev and Ms. Kam sit down with Daebreon Leach for a candid, hilarious, and thought-provoking conversation about identity, community, education, HBCUs, mentorship, resilience, and authentic leadership. Daebreon takes us from Rockford, Illinois, to Memphis, Tennessee, sharing how her experiences, her HBCU journey, and the communities around her shaped how she understands leadership and advocacy. Together, we unpack the idea of “community before credentials” and challenge traditional ideas about what leadership is supposed to look like. Because sometimes leadership is not a title, degree, or position. Sometimes it is making sure a student has what they need, connecting someone to the right resource, creating spaces of support, or knowing your community well enough to recognize what is missing. This conversation explores identity, lived experience, culturally responsive support, mentorship, accountability, boundaries, and the responsibility that comes with serving others. We also get into what it means to be “hood certified,” bring what you have learned back home, adapt to new spaces without losing yourself, and use your experiences to create opportunities for those coming behind you. Because authentic leadership is not always found in a boardroom. Sometimes it looks like a mentor. Sometimes it looks like a campus housing manager with a closet full of deodorant and toilet paper. Sometimes it looks like being the connector your community needs. And sometimes, it simply means being willing to show up as your full self. Pull up, press play, and join the conversation. What does authentic leadership look like in your community?
