I follow the city from roughly 1000 BC to the present, exploring the Gihon Spring, the Siloam Tunnel, shifting fortifications, Roman streets, monumental construction, and the archaeological layers preserved beneath the Old City. I also examine how destruction, rebuilding, flooding, and water management reshaped Jerusalem. At the center of the story is an unexpected clue: tiny pieces of straw trapped in ancient mortar helped date a massive dam near the Siloam Pool. By the end, I return to the opening photograph with a different view of Jerusalem—not as one preserved city, but as a landscape rewritten over thousands of years.
