Every Major Gundam Explained

The legendary Gundam franchise began in 1979 with the RX-78-2, an 18-meter prototype piloted by Amuro Ray that redefined the mecha genre by swapping super-robot heroics for gritty realities. Over the years, the Universal Century timeline introduced increasingly advanced and devastating machines, from Kamille Bidan's transformable Zeta Gundam to the heavily armed ZZ Gundam and Amuro’s funnel-equipped Nu Gundam. As the arms race escalated across decades, later conflicts introduced miniaturized marvels like the F91 and the Victory Gundam, proving that sleeker frames only brought darker wars. Decades later, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam unearthed buried secrets with its terrifying Newtype Destroyer system, drawing a direct line back to the political struggles of the original trilogy. Beyond the main timeline, alternate universes radically reimagined the formula, introducing martial-arts tournaments in Mobile Fighter G Gundam and political conspiracy thrillers featuring the Wing Gundam Zero. The franchise continued to push boundaries by exploring post-apocalyptic wastelands with the salvaged Gundam X and erasing history altogether through the nanomachine-wielding Turn A Gundam. Series like Gundam SEED, Gundam 00, and Gundam AGE introduced genetic conflicts, private armed interventions, and generational wars, fielding iconic machines like the Strike, Destiny, Exia, and AGE-1. In recent years, the brutally scavenged Barbatos from Iron-Blooded Orphans and the outlawed Aerial from The Witch from Mercury have proven that this enduring saga will always find fresh ways to reinvent the horrors of warfare.
