In this Dharma talk and guided meditation, recorded during our 08.29.26 online Sangha, we explore the in-between-ness that accompanies transitions of all kinds; the liminal space we inhabit when we're no longer who or where we were, and not yet who or where we're headed. Transitions come in countless forms: a child leaving home, a new job or business, retirement, the turning of the seasons, or any of the quiet shifts between the chapters of a life. This session is an invitation to meet that unsettled middle with compassion and skill, rather than rushing to find solid ground before we've had the chance to grow into what's next. Drawing on Buddhist wisdom, nature-based metaphor, and poetry, this session weaves together the teaching of impermanence (anicca), the Tibetan notion of the bardo or "space between," Rainer Maria Rilke's invitation to "live the questions," and the soft-shell period of the Dungeness crab. The talk includes: 🌿 The teaching of impermanence (anicca) as it moves from concept to lived, embodied experience 🌿 The bardo — the intermediate, in-between state — as a place to pause rather than an inconvenient hallway 🌿 Rilke's invitation to "live the questions" instead of rushing toward answers 🌿 The soft-shell period of the Dungeness crab as an image of the vulnerability that accompanies real change 🌿 Thích Nhất Hạnh's teaching on continuation — what remains even as form shifts 🌿 Sangha as shelter and refuge in the tender middle of the changing The guided meditation invites you to bring a transition from your own life into awareness, sense how it lives in the body, soften the reaching for answers, discover what might support you in the in-between, and open to what continues. It closes with Karen Hering's "A Poem for Living Through Change." May this practice support you in meeting your own transitions with gentleness, in giving yourself permission not to know yet, and in trusting what quietly continues to travel with you.
