What happens when a Pakistani walks into
a Sikh shop in Malerkotla, India?
I never expected this.
I was visiting Malerkotla for the first time.
All I needed was directions to find my relative's house.
I walked into a small PCO shop near Sarhindi Gate.
The owner's name was Iqbal.
The moment he heard my accent, he stopped.
Asked where I was from.
I said — Pakistan.
What happened next — I still can't believe it.
He didn't just give me directions.
He ordered juice for me without asking.
Then sent his own man to walk me
all the way to my relative's door.
But that was just the beginning.
Later that day, I walked into
Sardar Saree House to buy clothes
for my family back home.
The owner — a dignified Sikh elder —
looked at my bill.
And without me saying a single word...
he gave me 10% discount.
I said — "I think you made a mistake."
He smiled.
Then gave me another 10% off.
He said —
"The first 10% is for everyone.
But this second 10%?
This is only for you.
You came from our neighbour country.
You are our guest.
This is our gift to you."
I stood there — speechless.
In a world full of hatred between
Pakistan and India —
two ordinary men in Malerkotla
reminded me what Punjab really is.
Borders exist on paper.
Not in hearts.
This is just Day 1 of my Malerkotla story.
More coming soon.
