Put the phone down, sit still, and do absolutely nothing for sixty seconds. Watch how fast it turns unbearable. By second thirty your hand has started drifting toward your pocket, on its own, without permission.
In this video, we use Schopenhauer's philosophy of the Will to explain why boredom isn't low energy — it's the Will running at close to full intensity with nowhere to direct it, closer to a car alarm than to silence. Drawing on Timothy Wilson's famous shock experiment, where people chose mild electric shocks over sitting alone with their thoughts, and five case files (a man whose fifteen-minute daily chair sessions revealed the discomfort reliably peaks and loosens on its own, a hospice nurse who learned to distinguish the first wave of restlessness from the settled attentiveness after it, research showing people consistently overestimate how bad idle time will feel, children whose restlessness never got the chance to self-resolve when adults intervened too fast, and a retired teacher whose first unstructured week in forty years produced unexpected panic), we look at why the discomfort isn't a verdict on your life — and what's actually waiting on the other side of it if you let the alarm run its course.
