Filmed on Wednesday, September 17 2025, I drive around Evanston, IL and the Northwestern University campus to see what's going on. Evanston is named for John Evans, who was a member of the group of business leaders that founded Northwestern University. Northwestern University was founded in 1851 but Evanston was not formally incorporated until 1863. In the summer of 1912, Evanston's beaches became infested with thousands of rats. The rats were attracted by the large quantity of dead fish washed up from Lake Michigan. The rats were extremely large and savage, attacking anyone who disturbed them. In 1939, Evanston hosted the first NCAA basketball championship final. Evanston is the birthplace of Tinkertoy's and the ice cream sundae. The city was a dry community from 1858 until 1972, when the city council voted to allow restaurants and hotels to serve liquor. In 1984, retail outlets became able to sell alcohol within city limits. In 2021, Evanston became the first city in the US to pay reparations to African American residents. African American households were eligible to receive 25,000 payments. Due to the residents' leftist political activism, Evanston is commonly referred to as as "The People's Republic of Evanston". #drivingtour #richpeopleliving #illinois
