Around three in ten car finance trade-ins in Britain are now underwater — worth less than what's still owed on them. A record 45.7% of cars on UK roads are more than ten years old. And roughly nine in ten new cars bought privately here are bought on finance, just to make the monthly payment work. The average car on Britain's roads is now 9.7 years old — the oldest it has ever been. The SMMT's own explanation: motorists are "holding onto vehicles for longer amid cost-of-living pressures." The new car market crashed in 2020 and is still running about 20% below where it was. This video covers how the affordable new car disappeared. The Dacia Sandero launched here at £5,995 and now starts at £14,765 — and it's still the cheapest proper petrol car on sale. Car prices are up around 25% since 2020 on official figures, 30-40% by other measures. The Fiesta, Ka, Up, C1, 108 and Viva are all gone. And the two cheapest new cars in Britain today — the Dacia Spring at £11,990 and the Leapmotor T03 at £12,995 — are both built in China. Also covered: the ZEV mandate, which requires 33% of new sales to be electric this year, rising to 80% by 2030, and what that does to cheap petrol cars; the £2bn manufacturers spent discounting EVs in a single year, and the industry's own warning that "mandates do not make a market"; how the PCP balloon trap works, with a worked example; the voluntary termination right under the Consumer Credit Act that many trapped owners have never heard of; pre-registered "nearly new" cars; the Chinese overflow that took one in five UK sales in August; and the technology trap — from wet belts and battery recalls to BMW's heated seat subscription and Euro NCAP now requiring physical buttons. Plus what to actually do, whether you're keeping your car, stuck on finance, or buying right now — because with manufacturers behind on EV targets, buyers currently have more leverage than they've had in years. Would you buy a brand new car right now? Or are you keeping what you've got? Tell me how old your car is and how many miles it's done. uk car market, new car prices uk, car finance uk, pcp negative equity, voluntary termination, zev mandate, dacia sandero price, cheapest new cars uk, average age of cars uk, smmt, chinese cars uk, leapmotor t03, dacia spring, used car prices uk, car affordability, uk car industry, ev discounts, car crash 2027, car market collapse, uk car news
