This is a demonstration of an antique Bb Band Flute. These instruments were very common in the later 19th and early 20thC and were used in all types of bands. They most likely developed from the common Bb fife with no keys. These instruments are almost always pitched around A=454 which was the common band pitch in England as well as in the US. Good ones can have quite a sweet sound and can be played in an expressive manner. I have chosen some tunes by Oswald and a few other tunes from a later collection published by Charles Fischer in NY.
