Whether you need to hop onto the pavement to get out of the way of traffic or transition smoothly across street crossings, being able to negotiate kerbs fluently stops you from panicking on the road. In this tutorial filmed at the Port of Valencia, I break down the easiest, safest ways to get up and down kerbs, from diagonal stepping for beginners to scissoring and rolling off for intermediate street skaters. Kerb Tips: How to Pick Your Practice Kerb: Start on a small kerb with a rounded edge. Ensure smooth tarmac on both sides (up and down), a clean join with no deep cracks, and a quiet area away from busy traffic. Method 1: Diagonal Stepping Up & Down: Always approach and leave the kerb on an imaginary 45-degree diagonal line. You may wish to draw this in chalk. Keep your eyes fixed along your diagonal skating line. This prevents your skates from wobbling or spreading wide. Maintain a strong knee-over-toe stance throughout the step. Never step up or down onto a straight, locked knee. Method 2: Scissoring Off (Rolling Off the Edge): Master small scissor jumps on flat ground first. Distribute weight 60% back / 40% front, and absorb landings by dropping your hips/butt low into a deep knee bend. Once you are confident statically, try it rolling slowly. Approach the kerb on your 45-degree diagonal with speed. Enter a stable scissor position and let your skates roll off naturally. There is no need to jump up, just roll off. Common Kerb Pitfalls & Fixes: Wide Steps / Instability: Stepping wide comes from a lack of commitment. Stick strictly to your narrow diagonal line. Deviating From Your Line: Steering away from the kerb usually comes from fear. Place a chalk line or prop on the ground to visually lock in your direction. Knee Straightening: When you step up and down from the kerb with your knees straight, it can create instability. Ensure a deep knee bend on each side of the kerb. #inlineskating #rollerblading #howtoinlineskate #inlineskatelesson #kerbs ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - Intro 00:41 - Choosing the Kerb 01:30 - Method 1: Diagonal Stepping 02:06 - Method 2: Scissoring Off 02:20 - Static Jumps 03:22 - Rolling Off Kerb 03:34 - Problem 1: Wide Step over Kerb 03:50 - Problem 2: Deviation of Skating Line 04:05 - Problem 3: Straight Leg Stepping 04:18 - Summary & Progressions ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHO IS ASHA SKATEFRESH? • Founder of Skatefresh (since 2000) • Skate Coach for BBC and Disney's "Soy Luna" • Teaching inline and quad skating for 26 years • Former international roller figure skating • Skating for 43 years • @Powerslidebrand Ambassador since 2011 • @EndlessBlading Ambassador • ICP Examiner 350+ instructors certified worldwide (Inline Certification Program) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ LEARN TO SKATE WITH SKATEFRESH Website: https://www.skatefresh.com Online Courses: https://www.skatefresh.com (Courses Tab) Skate Tours & Events: https://www.skatefresh.com/trips ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ FOLLOW ASHA Instagram: @skatefreshasha Facebook: Skatefresh Asha ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ EQUIPMENT: Asha's skates: Powerslide EVO + Endless Frames 4x90 Helmet: Thousand Helmets Leggings: K-DEER Skate-inspired clothing: https://skatefreshtshirts.teemill.com Filmed on iPhone 13Pro or Insta360 Video Footage Filmed by @skaterstubrightonskate
