The ONLY Man to Take a Ring Away From Bill Russell....

Bill Russell reached the NBA Finals 12 times and walked away with 11 championships. The one time he didn’t? Bob Pettit and the 1958 St. Louis Hawks. But Pettit’s story with Russell actually started one year earlier. In the 1957 NBA Finals, Pettit scored 39 points in a double-overtime Game 7 and came within inches of stealing Russell’s first championship. His final opportunity rolled off the rim. One year later, he got another chance — and this time, Pettit delivered one of the greatest championship performances in basketball history: 50 points, 19 rebounds, and 19 of St. Louis’ final 21 points in a 110–109 title-clinching victory. In this video, we break down Bob Pettit’s rise from being cut from his high school varsity team to becoming the *first MVP in NBA history*, how the Hawks actually helped Boston acquire Bill Russell, the heartbreak of the 1957 Finals, Russell’s ankle injury in 1958, Pettit’s historic Game 6, and why that championship remains the *only NBA Finals series Bill Russell ever lost*. Pettit retired as a 2x MVP, 11x All-Star, NBA champion, and the first player in league history to score 20,000 career points — yet his name doesn’t get mentioned nearly enough with the other giants of his era. With Pettit passing away at 93, this felt like the right time to tell the story of the man responsible for the lone blemish on Bill Russell’s nearly untouchable Finals record. Does Russell’s injury change how you view the 1958 championship, or does Pettit’s 50-point closeout settle the argument? Let me know in the comments.
