A Supreme Court order has raised important questions for property owners and shopkeepers. In its September 22, 2026 order in Loganathan v. State of Tamil Nadu, the Court directed authorities to prioritise action against commercial activity in areas earmarked exclusively for residential use, where permission allows residential use only. Premises violating those conditions are to be sealed in the first instance. This does not mean every shop operating from a home is automatically prohibited. The property's permitted use, existing master plan, and applicable building bye-laws matter.
