In 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope detected carbon dioxide, methane, and a faint trace of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) in the atmosphere of K2-18b, a sub-Neptune exoplanet 124 light-years away orbiting in the habitable zone of a red dwarf star. On Earth, DMS is produced almost exclusively by living organisms. If confirmed, this would be the most important discovery in the history of science. But extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and the signal sits right at the edge of what the data can reliably tell us. This video is a deep exploration of the full K2-18b story: how astronomers pull chemical fingerprints from starlight using transmission spectroscopy, what makes this planet so unusual, the Hycean world hypothesis that reshaped the search for life, the fierce scientific debate between advocates and skeptics over what the data really shows, the hard lessons of past false starts like the Mars meteorite and Venus phosphine, and the next-generation telescopes that could finally settle the question. What would it actually take to confirm life on another world? And what would it mean if a planet this alien turned out to be alive?
