I Didn’t Expect China’s Most Laid-Back City to Look Like This

What does the future of China actually look like? I spent a day exploring Chengdu — a city famous for pandas, tea houses, spicy Sichuan hotpot and its laid-back lifestyle. But behind that relaxed atmosphere, Chengdu is also becoming one of China’s most exciting technology and creative hubs. We explored the city’s huge gaming industry, home to companies like Ubisoft and teams behind some of China’s biggest games, as well as the animation industry behind the hugely successful Ne Zha movies. I travelled to ancient Egypt in VR, visited a robotics company to see how robots are developed and tested, and discovered how AI is already being used to create movies and TV shows. One company even turned us into kung fu characters in an AI-generated film in just 10 minutes! We finished at an incredible robot store filled with robot dogs, humanoid robots and even robot boxers — before ending the night the Chengdu way: traditional Sichuan hotpot with the illuminated city skyline around us.
