Situated right between the major hubs of Heraklion and Rethymnon, it is a former fishing village that has evolved into a stylish and popular holiday destination. Unlike its famous, tropical Indonesian namesake, Bali in Crete offers a classic, picture-perfect Mediterranean landscape where dramatic cliffs wrap around sheltered, aquamarine coves. The town winds around steep hillsides and distinct bays, offering stunning panoramic views from almost every corner. It is often compared to the Amalfi Coast when its vibrant bougainvillaea flowers are in full bloom. Bali is highly popular with couples and families. It is not a rowdy party town; evening entertainment centers around sunset cocktail bars, traditional Greek tavernas, and relaxed beachfront dining. In recent years, many of the boutique hotels and seaside resorts have been modernized with minimalist, boho-chic decors. Because of its unique geography, Bali features a series of distinct, sandy coves. A unique perk is that the waters here are cooled by fresh mountain springs and are naturally sheltered from Crete’s strong northern winds, making the sea exceptionally calm and great for swimming. The main beaches stretch from south to north The longest, widest, and busiest beach in the area. It is fully organized with sunbeds and is ideal for families. Varkotopos Beach: Tucked inside a rugged shoreline, this beach features shallow waters and often has inflatable water facilities for children during the summer months. Limani (Harbour) Beach: Located right next to the village port. It is lined with traditional seafood tavernas serving fresh daily catches. Karavostasi Beach: The smallest and most remote cove hidden at the very northern tip of the resort. It offers a quieter vibe and features beautiful rock formations and small sea caves perfect for snorkeling. You can readily rent kayaks, pedalos, and jet skis, or book a trip with the local diving school to explore the coastal caves. Attali Monastery (Monastery Atali): Located just a short drive south into the hills, this beautiful 17th-century fortress-style monastery offers a historic escape and panoramic mountain vistas. Melidoni Cave: Situated roughly 15 km south, this spectacular cave is steeped in ancient myth and local history. Day Trips: Because Bali sits right off the main national highway, you can easily drive or take a local bus to the vibrant Venetian town of Rethymnon (a 30-minute drive west) or the historic capital of Heraklion (a 45-minute drive east). Getting There: Bali does not have its own airport.
