One Word Sent My Home Assistant Voice Command to a Paid AI

I told my voice assistant to turn the bedroom fan on high. It worked. But Home Assistant's debug view said "Processed locally: false": my house had quietly handed the command to a paid AI model, because my custom sentence said "to high" and I say "on high". One word. In my house, every command that isn't in the phrasebook goes to a paid AI model. Some of those misses are real questions the AI should handle. Some are simple, fixable mistakes like this one, and each one costs a little money for something the house could have done itself. In plain English (the full version is in the pinned comment): Phrasebook: the phrases your house handles on its own, no AI involved. Interpreter: the paid AI model your house calls when what you say isn't in the phrasebook. Custom sentence: a phrase you add to the phrasebook yourself. How to check yours: Settings → Voice assistants → three-dot menu on your assistant → Debug. Pick a run and read "Processed locally". True means your house handled it. False means it went to your AI agent. The GitHub report on "prefer handling commands locally" (closed by the stale bot, not fixed): https://github.com/home-assistant/cor... I use Claude for basically everything technical in my home automation setup. This channel documents the gaps nobody tells you about. #homeassistant #smarthome #homeautomation
