Ku'u Lei Makamae

Sometimes visiting a place to feel it’s mana or spending time with a special someone, inhaling their life’s experiences can inspire a song. Ku’u Lei Makamae required a bit more. I was having a dry spell in writing music for a new album project. My sweet husband suggested we go on a staycation to Waimea, Maui or Waikiki. I crinkled my nose at each place. We went nowhere just like my writing. Then on a flight to Waimea as the plane left the ground, a tune whispered in my ear above the hum of the powerful engines. Soft at first, but as we lifted higher into the clouds, reaching the banks of Heaven, each note became so distinct and with it the words to this song. By the time we descended, this mele was complete. Because this song is so intimate, we kept the video production within ourselves. My family of four brainstormed and story boarded our ideas. My son, Chaz filmed and edited each scene. We all scrutinized the angles, the lighting, choreography. This was truly a family affair. Releasing the video today is no mistake. It is my gift to my husband on his 50th birthday. For so many of my birthdays, he would sneak out while I was still sleeping to get me a ginger lei. The lei would sit about my shoulders all throughout the day. This was his way to be with me. This is my way to be with him.
