Just 670 million years after the Big Bang, a black hole already weighed 1.6 billion Suns. How could anything grow that fast? One strange idea: it started life inside a star. In this video we follow one of the most surprising ideas in astrophysics, the quasi-star: a black hole born at the heart of a gigantic star, feeding from the inside out. We look at the cosmic speed limit on black hole growth, how "heavy seeds" might form, how a quasi-star lives and dies, and what the James Webb Space Telescope's mysterious "little red dots" might be telling us. We also explain why the new "black hole star" observations are exciting, but are not proof that classic quasi-stars ever existed. Quasi-stars are a theoretical model. All illustrations are schematic and not to scale. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 A star with a black hole heart 0:48 A Monster Too Early 1:39 The Cosmic Speed Limit 2:51 Born Big? 4:00 The Quasi-Star 5:28 The Cocoon Breaks 6:33 The Hunt 8:18 Cousins, Not Twins 9:14 What we know, and what we don't 📚 Sources • Wang et al.
