OUT OF SERVICE FOR 23 YEARS — and then Britain’s fastest steam locomotive came back to life. The LNER A4 4468 Mallard is one of the most legendary locomotives in British railway history. On 3 July 1938, Mallard reached an incredible 126 mph (203 km/h) at Stoke Bank, setting the world speed record for a steam locomotive — a record that still stands today. After being withdrawn from service in 1963, Mallard was preserved and eventually underwent an extensive restoration. In 1986, this legendary locomotive returned to the rails, bringing one of Britain's greatest railway achievements back to life. In this video, we explore the story of Mallard, from her record-breaking speed and years out of service to her preservation, restoration and return to operation. 🚂 LNER A4 4468 Mallard 🇬🇧 British railway history 🏆 World steam locomotive speed record 🔧 Historic locomotive restoration 💨 126 mph / 203 km/h If you love British locomotives, railway history, restoration projects and the incredible machines that shaped Britain's railways, subscribe for more stories from the world of historic railways. #LNERMallard #Mallard4468 #BritishRailways #SteamLocomotive #LocomotiveRestoration #RailwayHistory #UKRailways #TrainRestoration
