Here's the reason why we DON'T celebrate Halloween, and how Halloween is celebrated in Malaysia vs the UK.
We're a British Muslim revert family and we don't let our kids celebrate Halloween. And now that we've moved to Malaysia from the UK, Halloween looks VERY different.
In the UK Halloween is EVERYWHERE. In the stores there's entire sections dedicated to halloween decorations, sweets, costumes, etc. And sure, there's a lot of fun with Halloween. Kids get to dress up as their favourite characters, there's often events at the school like parties or competitions, and it even coincides with the half term. There's pumpkin carving and trick or treating which is where everyone goes and knocks on strangers doors, expecting sweets or cash from the person who answers.
But, aside from the 'cute' side of Halloween, there's a lot of scary things which happen. Things which scare people or even worse hurt them. And honestly, it sucks. It's gotten to a point where I know so many parents who are really cautious around Halloween, and where they take their kids out trick or treating.
But that's not why we don't celebrate Halloween. The truth is the history of Halloween is crazy, and it surprises me that not a lot of people actually know the history of Halloween, especially in the UK.
Halloween actually stems from the Celtic festival of Samhain, and a part of that festival was to celebrate the New Year which was celebrated around the 1st of November. However, the bigger part of it was the belief that on that night the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred. So wearing costumes, masks, carving pumpkins, all of these things originate from practices where people would wear them to ward of wayward souls. And because we know this, and we know that Halloween is a part of a belief system, of someone else's religion, we don't celebrate it. Because Allah teaches us not to.
In the Quran we're told we should not celebrate the festivals that belong to the religions or beliefs of others. So Halloween, just like Christmas, this is why we don't celebrate it. But that doesn't mean we judge anyone who does. Everyone choose to parent differently, and this is our own choice.
And yes, even though Malaysia is a Muslim country, other religions are welcomed and accepted here, including their festivals. Yet there's no Halloween decorations we've seen here. We've seen tons for Diwali which is coming up, but nothing for Halloween so it's very different here in Malaysia vs the UK. But I'd love to know, what's your views on Halloween? Do you celebrate it?
