They Found A Cave In The Basque Country Sealed 7,000 Years — And What Was Inside Shouldn't Exist In nineteen sixteen a group of boys were messing about on a mountainside in the Basque Country and found a gap in the rock that nobody knew existed, and behind it was a chamber the mountain had sealed by itself thirteen thousand years earlier, purely by gravity and loose stone. In this one I go through what the layers underneath showed, two entirely different kinds of human sheltering in the same stone thousands of years apart, and then the thing that turns this from a cave story into something much odder. A river, the Ebro, that seems to have functioned as an actual boundary between modern humans in the north and Neanderthals in the south for six to eight thousand years, longer than all of recorded history. Late farming, hundreds of hilltop dolmens, Neolithic burials stacked directly above Ice Age paintings. And then Euskara, a language with no living relatives anywhere on Earth, which Rome, the Visigoths, Charlemagne and centuries of Islamic rule to the south all failed to erase. The genetics agree with the language. A study sequencing a hundred and ninety samples across both sides of the border found only two windows of real outside mixing in the entire record, both between the eleventh and sixteenth centuries.
