How to Drill a Well by Hand Having a hand pump attached to a shallow well on your property can be very useful, especially if you have limited water usage in your area. I hand drilled this one in our backyard to help with cleaning, putting out our fire pit, and giving water to our dog. It can also be used to water your plants, gardens, and lawns.
