Ecuador flooding has intensified as 11 rivers and creeks overflowed their banks by October 22, 2026, while more than 23,000 people have been affected by weather-related emergencies since late August. Heavy rain, flash flooding, and hail have damaged homes, roads, banana plantations, and subway stations, from coastal communities in Guayas and Esmeraldas to the high-altitude capital of Quito. In this video, we examine the latest river overflows across five provinces, flooding in Tenguel and Manabí, and the hailstorm that damaged roads and Metro stations in Quito. We also explain how unusually warm Pacific waters associated with developing El Niño conditions, combined with atmospheric disturbances, are contributing to Ecuador’s severe weather. The danger is far from over. A new weather warning issued Thursday covers Friday, October 23, through Sunday, October 25, with heavy rainfall expected across seven coastal provinces. Saturated ground, already swollen rivers, and the threat of landslides along the western Andes could make the next round of storms especially dangerous. With floodwaters still affecting communities near Tenguel and Muisne, forecasters are watching closely to see whether river levels rise further over the weekend. Global Weather covers natural disasters and extreme weather events as they develop, using sourced reporting and avoiding unsupported speculation.
