Plasmodium vivax now accounts for the majority of malaria cases in the Asia Pacific region. Radical cure with 8-aminoquinolines, such as primaquine or tafenoquine, requires prior G6PD testing because of the risk of acute haemolytic anaemia in people with G6PD deficiency. However, facility-based testing may miss people with limited access to care and those with asymptomatic or subclinical infections. Community-level G6PD screening could help address these gaps but also presents operational challenges. This APMEN webinar brought together specialists with field experience to share lessons from implementing or piloting community-level G6PD screening and practical considerations for national malaria programmes considering this approach.
