My name is Zahi Shaked, a licensed tour guide in Israel and YouTuber. In today's video, join me on an unforgettable, comprehensive walking tour covering every single inch of the western wall of Jerusalem's Old City. This is a journey through time, perfect for anyone who loves biblical history, archaeology, and the Holy Land. We begin our walk at Mount Zion, a significant location that was famously and mysteriously excluded by the Ottoman Turks when they built the current city walls. From there, we dive deep into the fascinating layers of Jerusalem's fortifications. I will show you the physical evidence of the city's defenses through the ages—tracing the stonework from the Hellenistic (Hasmonean) period, through the grand Herodian era, and all the way to the iconic 16th-century walls constructed by Suleiman the Magnificent. As we walk, we experience the vibrant contrast of modern and ancient Jerusalem, passing by groups of ultra-Orthodox Jewish girls going about their day. We then step back into biblical times as we approach the magnificent remains of Herod's Palace. This is a site of immense historical and religious significance, as many scholars and archaeologists believe this (the Praetorium) was the very location where Jesus was tried by Pontius Pilate. Our exploration continues as we uncover ancient First Temple period Jewish burial tombs, directly connecting us to the days of the prophets and kings of Judah. Approaching the famous Jaffa Gate, I will share the fascinating story of the grand Ottoman clock tower that once stood there before it was dismantled by the British Mandate authorities. We will also see how the removal of the modern houses that once clung to the ancient walls finally revealed the true glory, scale, and majesty of the Old City's fortifications. Keep your eyes peeled for an incredible archaeological Easter egg along the route: a massive stone in secondary use bearing the distinct mark of the Roman 10th Legion (Legio X Fretensis)—the very legion responsible for the destruction of the Second Temple. Finally, our journey takes us all the way to the northwestern corner of the wall, where we marvel at the massive, deep Crusader moat built to defend the city. The intense Middle Eastern heat eventually defeated my camera, causing it to die right at the very end of our route, but the experience was an absolute joy and a full immersion into history from start to finish!
