Why Wrexham’s £90M Racecourse Expansion Is Harder Than It Looks

Wrexham AFC is rebuilding the missing Kop at the Racecourse Ground, but this is becoming far more complicated than simply adding thousands of seats. The new Kop was originally planned for around 5,500 supporters, while Wrexham has also pushed for additional capacity that could take the stand toward 7,750 seats and lift the Racecourse beyond 18,000 overall. But more seats bring new challenges, from construction inside a live historic stadium to planning, transport, funding, and the limits of the surrounding urban site. There is also more behind the headline £90 million figure than it first appears. Wrexham’s financial accounts show a construction contract with McLaren valued at about £69.3 million, alongside a £17.35 million performance related grant agreement connected to the wider development of the Racecourse. With full operation now targeted around 2027, the bigger question is no longer whether Wrexham can rebuild the Kop.
