Hokitika Gorge Walk | Best Short Walk on New Zealand's West Coast | New Zealand 4K Walking Tour 2026

Join me on one of the most beautiful short walks on New Zealand’s West Coast – the famous Hokitika Gorge Walk. Starting from the main entrance, the track quickly leads into lush native rainforest filled with towering rimu, miro, and podocarp trees. Within just a few minutes, the forest opens to the first viewing platform, where visitors get their first glimpse of the incredible Hokitika Gorge. The colour of the water is almost impossible to describe. Depending on the light, it appears turquoise, jade, emerald, or bright blue-green. Photos hardly do it justice – it is something you really have to see with your own eyes. Continuing along the easy boardwalk through the forest, the track soon reaches the first suspension bridge. From here, the views down into the gorge are spectacular, with the crystal-clear Hokitika River winding between white granite rock walls. After crossing the bridge, the walk continues through native bush to a second viewing platform, offering another stunning perspective of the gorge and river upstream. From there, the track carries on toward the newer upper suspension bridge before looping back through the forest to complete the circuit. The full Hokitika Gorge Walk is approximately 2 km long and takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to complete the entire loop, depending on how many photo stops you make. The track is well maintained, mostly flat, and suitable for almost all fitness levels. For this walk, I turned around at the second suspension bridge rather than completing the full loop. From the car park to the second bridge is approximately 20–25 minutes of easy walking, so allowing for photo stops and a relaxed pace, the return trip back to the car park is usually around 45–60 minutes. Hokitika Gorge is located about 33 km inland from Hokitika township. The gorge was carved by the Hokitika River through ancient granite rock over thousands of years. The area also has cultural significance, as Māori traditionally travelled through this region while crossing between the east and west coasts of the South Island via alpine passes. In 2020, the addition of a second suspension bridge transformed the track into the popular loop walk enjoyed by visitors today. Despite being a relatively short walk, Hokitika Gorge delivers some of the most unforgettable scenery on the West Coast. The combination of native rainforest, suspension bridges, and the famous turquoise water makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring New Zealand’s South Island.
