If school safety begins before a child reaches the school gate, how safe is the journey to and from school? The WeMeet Dialogue Series | Safety in Schools – Issues & Concerns, Series 1 brought educators and school leaders together to examine school safety beyond rules, protocols and emergency preparedness, looking closely at infrastructure, geography, security and the environments in which children learn. Opening the conversation, Mr. G. Balasubramanian, Veteran Educator, Author, Leader & Mentor, Teacher360, explored why school safety must move beyond compliance towards thoughtful design, contextual preparedness and a culture of shared responsibility. The dialogue brought together Ms. Kalpana Choudhary, Former Principal and School Director, Ms. Shalini Nair, Founder Principal, Kikani Global Academy, Coimbatore and Dr. Atul Nischal, President, EDXSO, Delhi who shared perspectives from school leadership, infrastructure, safeguarding and the wider education ecosystem. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 🔹 Is school infrastructure designed for learning as well as safety? 🔹 How should schools adapt safety measures to their geographical and environmental realities? 🔹 What does a truly child-centred and inclusive school environment look like? 🔹 Can safety be ensured through rules alone, or does it require a culture of ownership? 🔹 How can schools strengthen security while creating environments that remain open, welcoming and conducive to learning? 🔹 What role should students, teachers, parents and school leadership play in creating safer schools? 🔹 How can regular safety audits and school-level quality systems move safety from documentation to action? A central idea that emerged from the discussion was that *there cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach to school safety.* National safety standards provide essential foundations, but schools must also respond to their local geography, climate, infrastructure and community realities. The conversation also examined environmental comfort, space per child, sanitation, accessibility, learning-centric design, layered security and the importance of human responsibility in safeguarding every child. Ultimately, the dialogue moved beyond the question of “Is the school compliant?” to a more important one: Is the school thoughtfully designed and prepared to keep children safe? WeMeet creates a space for educators to question existing practices, exchange experiences and explore possibilities together. Because safer schools are not created by rule books alone. They are created through thoughtful design, shared responsibility and a culture of care. #WeMeet #Teacher360 #SchoolSafety #SafetyInSchools #SchoolLeadership #SafeSchools #EducationLeadership #ProfessionalLearning #ConversationsThatShapeEducation #WeMeetOnWednesdays
