In March of 2016, a sixty-five-year-old billionaire gave an interview to Fortune magazine. He had never designed a golf club. He had never played the tour. He was an accountant from East Baltimore who had made his fortune selling website names. And for less than a year he had been selling golf clubs of his own. The irons cost three hundred dollars. Not a set. Each one. A full bag ran about five thousand dollars. People kept asking him whether those prices would ever come down. He said no. If anything, he said, they would go up.
Five years later, his company was selling a brand-new iron for $115. Ten years later, the brand that refused to sit on a rack was on the shelf at one of America's biggest golf chains.
PXG is not dead. Nobody bought it. Nobody stripped it for parts. Bob Parsons still owns it. So what happened to the $300 iron, the ring of tungsten screws, and the promise that the price would only go up? The answer involves two engineers who walked out of Ping, a lawsuit against TaylorMade and Dick's, a cast iron that undercut the flagship, and one spring in 2020 when every other golf company closed its doors and PXG didn't.
If you ever paid for a set of PXG irons, tell me in the comments: what year, what you paid per iron, and whether they are still in the bag.
