Did you know that many of the earliest Doctor Who stories weren't originally called the names we know today?
Early Doctor Who episode titles, original Doctor Who production documents, William Hartnell stories, BBC production notes, Doctor Who history.
Before An Unearthly Child*, *The Daleks and The Edge of Destruction became the accepted story titles, they appeared under a surprising variety of names in scripts, production paperwork, books and magazines. From *Doctor Who and the Tribe of Gum* to *100,000 BC**, **The Dead Planet**, **Inside the Spaceship**, **The Lion Heart* and more, the naming of Doctor Who's earliest adventures was far from settled.
In this video, we trace how these titles evolved through BBC production documents, the 1973 Doctor Who 10th Anniversary Special, *The Making of Doctor Who*, *Doctor Who Weekly*, and Jean-Marc Lofficier's influential 1981 *Programme Guide*, which effectively standardised the story titles still used by fans today.
If you've ever wondered why these stories have different names in older books and magazines, this is the story behind them.
Next time, we'll look at another fascinating part of Doctor Who history: why some of the Target novelisations were renamed.
