Arjunaabhyasa – Concept to Confidence!
Q1. What is a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances change into new substances with different properties.
Q2. What are the signs of a chemical reaction?
Change in colour, change in temperature, evolution of gas, formation of a precipitate, and change in state.
Q3. What is a chemical equation?
A chemical equation represents a chemical reaction using symbols and chemical formulae.
Q4. What is a balanced chemical equation?
An equation in which the number of atoms of each element is equal on both sides is called a balanced chemical equation.
Q5. Why should chemical equations be balanced?
They must be balanced to obey the law of conservation of mass.
Q6. What is a combination reaction?
A reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a single product.
Example: CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂
Q7. What is a decomposition reaction?
A reaction in which one compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances.
Example: CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂
Q8. What is a displacement reaction?
A reaction in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from its compound.
Example: Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu
Q9. What is a double displacement reaction?
A reaction in which two compounds exchange ions to form new compounds.
Example: Na₂SO₄ + BaCl₂ → BaSO₄ + 2NaCl
Q10. What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen from a substance.
Q11. What is reduction?
Reduction is the removal of oxygen or addition of hydrogen to a substance.
Q12. What is a redox reaction?
A reaction in which oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously.
Q13. What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that releases heat energy. Example: Burning of natural gas.
Q14. What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that absorbs energy from its surroundings. Example: Thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate.
Q15. What is corrosion?
The gradual destruction of metals by air, moisture, or chemicals is called corrosion. Rusting of iron is an example.
Q16. What is rancidity?
The oxidation of fats and oils, causing unpleasant smell and taste, is called rancidity.
Q17. How can rancidity be prevented?
By refrigeration, adding antioxidants, storing food in airtight containers, and packing food with nitrogen gas.
Q18. What is a precipitate?
An insoluble solid formed during a chemical reaction in a solution is called a precipitate.
Q19. What happens when lead nitrate is heated?
It decomposes to form lead oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and oxygen.
2Pb(NO₃)₂ → 2PbO + 4NO₂ + O₂
Q20. What happens when an iron nail is placed in copper sulphate solution?
Iron displaces copper from copper sulphate, forming iron sulphate and depositing copper on the nail. The blue solution turns green.
