Why does Sardinia have thousands of ancient stone towers—and what were they actually for? Explore the nuraghi through Su Nuraxi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a much richer story than its silhouette suggests.
This archaeology documentary takes a closer look at Bronze Age Sardinia: monumental stone construction, corbeled chambers, defensive architecture, changing entrances, and the settlement surrounding Su Nuraxi at Barumini.
Defense is an important part of the explanation. But these buildings also changed over generations. Later additions, communal spaces such as Hut 80, and evidence from Iron Age, Punic, and Roman periods raise a different question: not simply “What was it for?” but “What was happening here—and when?”
We separate surviving architectural evidence from interpretation—and explain why one remarkable site cannot provide a single answer for every nuraghe across the island.
If you enjoy ancient history, Mediterranean archaeology, and the unexpected stories behind places in Italy, this is Sardinia beyond the postcard.
