Samantha Hankey and Andrey Zhilikhovsky sing an excerpt from Dorabella and Guglielmo’s Act II duet in the final dress rehearsal. Production: Phelim McDermott. Conductor: Nimrod David Pfeffer. 2026–27 season.
The third and final collaboration of Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte is a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with a dark perspective on human nature, an old story with a startlingly modern tone, and a beautiful score depicting questionable behavior. The opera was originally set in Naples—something of a tourist destination in the 18th century—but the Met’s production by Phelim McDermott updates the action to a seaside amusement park in the 1950s.
