New Yorkers have been leaving for the same handful of cities for years, chasing cheaper homes and easier winters. But in many of those exact cities, home values are now below their peak, some by six figures. This countdown goes through 15 places New Yorkers moved to, from Charlotte and Raleigh down to Cape Coral and Austin, where a typical home has lost about $187,600 since the top. For every city: Zillow's typical home value at its peak vs June 2026, the dollars a peak buyer lost, and the local reason behind it, from overbuilding and cooling tech hiring to hurricanes, heat and Florida's insurance bills. The pattern is simple: it usually wasn't the city that failed people, it was buying at the 2022 top. Most of these places are still worth more than they were in 2019. Did you leave New York? Would you do it again? Tell me in the comments.
