What if I told you one of Shanghai's most beloved lunch spots is hidden inside a fairytale castle by Suzhou River This is the *Butterfly Bay Community Service Center (蝴蝶湾滨河党群服务中心)* — a Queen Anne-style red-brick mansion with pointed towers, arched corridors and dormer windows, standing right by the Suzhou Creek in Jing'an District. Locals call it the "Butterfly Castle." And on its ground floor sits the *Butterfly Kitchen (蝴蝶食坊)* — a community canteen that feeds the neighborhood for next to nothing. In this video, I take you inside: *🏰 The Castle* — this isn't a tourist attraction, it's a working community hub. Built as a storybook mansion a century ago, it's now home to a canteen, a reading room, a childrens play room and even a health station. *🍚 The Canteen* — around 30 lunch dishes, changing every single day: braised pork belly, squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, golden fried pork chops, seasonal greens — the kind of honest home cooking your grandmother would approve of. *👵👨💼 The Crowd* — by 11 a.m. it's the neighborhood seniors; by noon, the office workers arrive. Students, grandparents, foreigners — everyone queues together at the same counter. It's one of the few places in Shanghai where you'll see the whole city at one table. *💰 The Prices* — affordable, no-frills meals that make you wonder why anyone eats anywhere else. I'll show you what a full lunch costs and what the portions actually look like. discounts for seniors aged 60 and above, as well as military veterans and active-duty service members. 📍 Where: 28 Kangding East Road, Shimen 2nd Road, Jing'an District — right beside the Suzhou Creek promenade (and just around the corner from the former residence of writer Eileen Chang). I'm Dan — a local raising a family of four in Shanghai, sharing real life beyond the skyline.
