The wind went somewhere in the last hour and never came back. The bay has gone completely flat, gold from one end to the other, and the sun is sitting right down on the line of the water without seeming to move at all. Whatever heat the day put into the sand is still there, held just under the surface, warm on top and cool a hand's depth down.
The net comes in the old way. Two long ropes, a line of people on each, everybody leaning back at the same slow angle and taking a step when the rope says to. Nothing about it is quick. The rope comes up wet and heavy and coils in soft piles on the sand, salt drying white on every arm, and the gulls have long since given up on making any noise about it.
Up past the tideline, curled into the dry warm sand, a small black cat has picked the best spot on the whole beach. Golden eyes barely open, tail tucked around, watching the rope come in without the slightest intention of helping.
Underneath it all the bass sits deep and analog, with an intimate baritone drifting over tight funk guitar and a dreamy Rhodes, warm tape hiss and a soft crackle of vinyl underneath. Ninety minutes of unhurried 70s grooves, built to stay in the background while you work.
