Franz Joseph Haydn - "Emperor" Quartet, Op. 76, No. 3: Movement II - Piano Arrangement
This video shows my solo piano arrangement focusing on the main theme from the second movement (Poco adagio, cantabile) of Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 76, No. 3, famously known as the "Emperor Quartet". While the quartet as a whole is in C major, the adagio is written in G major.
STRUCTURE & FORM
This arrangement focuses exclusively on an expanded version of the foundational main theme itself and does not include the subsequent variations. To make the standalone theme complete and self-contained on the piano, the original A-A-B-C-C structural outline has been expanded into an A-A-B-C-B-C-C form.
PIANO ADAPTATION & VOICING
While preserving the core musical content of the original quartet, the arrangement makes use of the piano's broader compass by frequently dropping the bass lines an octave lower—especially starting from the first repetition of Theme A—to grant greater warmth and spatial depth. In a few instances, alternative chord inversions were introduced to enrich the harmonic color for the keyboard. Furthermore, minor melodic embellishments have been added alongside connective bass-line figures, while secondary internal voices have been streamlined to avoid complicating execution.
TEMPO & METRONOME
While an 1855 historical source edition suggests a metronome marking of 56 BPM for the movement, this piano arrangement proposes a tempo of around 78 BPM. Playing it too slowly on a piano tends to fragment the melodies due to sound decay. Performers are free to adjust the pulse according to their own artistic vision.
PEDALING & ARTICULATION
The pedal markings provided throughout the score serve as an indicative guide to assist in achieving a singing line (legato). In most sections, careful finger-legato and natural hand movement are sufficient to ensure smooth voice leading, making it possible to rely on subtle half-pedaling or minimal damper pedal use to preserve harmonic clarity.
HARMONIC ANALYSIS & CHORD SYMBOLS
The Roman numeral analysis and modern chord symbols on screen and in the score serve as modern analytical and educational tools for today's performers. For chord qualities, the symbol Δ7 denotes major seventh chords, while the slashed circle symbol ø denotes half-diminished (m7b5) chords. Chord symbols in parentheses indicate harmonic implications derived from two-voice textures without an explicit bass note.
FINGERING
Fingerings are included selectively at critical technical points—particularly where pedaling is light or where specific finger choices secure a smooth, legato voice-leading. In standard scalar passages, fingerings are omitted to maintain a clean visual layout.
