What was a quiet Victorian day REALLY like for Charles Darwin at home? Fall asleep to a slow, gentle history story set at Down House in the Kent countryside, in the spring of 1858. In this story: • Early walks and breakfast in a Victorian country house full of children • Darwin's study, his wheeled chair and his famous thinking path, the Sandwalk • Pigeons, earthworms and the garden experiments • Letters, a novel read aloud on the sofa, tea • A quiet evening by the fire, and bedtime This is an imagined ordinary day. Its rhythm follows the daily routine his son Francis Darwin later described; the small events and some minor characters are imagined. In late April 1858 Darwin was in fact away for a water cure at Moor Park, so hear this as a spring day of that year at home. The Wallace letter and the family's loss came a few weeks later and are not part of this story. The first scenes are illustrated, then the screen slowly dims to a dark screen with faint embers, so the light won't disturb your sleep. The narration and a soft fireplace continue to the end. Length: 1 hour 23 minutes. New quiet days from history every week. Subscribe if you'd like to fall asleep somewhere in the past tomorrow night. #historyforsleep #sleepstory #boringhistory
