Hurricane Simon is battering the Pacific coast of Mexico. On Saturday, October 10, seawater surged onto coastal roads in Manzanillo and through the beach town of Cuyutlán in Colima as the Category 4 hurricane passed about 100 km offshore. Simon's winds peaked at 155 mph (250 km/h) with a pressure of 928 mb on Saturday night, just short of Category 5\.
At 9 AM CST on Sunday, October 11, the National Hurricane Center put Simon at 145 mph, about 105 km west-northwest of Manzanillo, moving north-northwest almost parallel to the Jalisco coast. Simon has not made landfall; a direct landfall between Pérula and Cabo Corrientes is still possible, but the official track keeps the eye close to the shoreline before it weakens and heads toward Sinaloa early next week.
Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo airports are closed, 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima are on red alert, and non-essential activity is suspended in 24 municipalities across Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán. Another 8–16 inches of rain is forecast, with isolated totals of 30 inches. No deaths have been reported on the Jalisco, Colima or Nayarit coast.
