The Mafia Boss Sits at the Wrong Blind Date Table — Her Next Move Shocks Him Completely
A mafia boss sat down at the wrong table, and the woman waiting there told him to get up. It was quarter past seven on a cold Saturday evening in Providence, and Gemma Hale had been sitting alone at table fourteen for fifteen minutes. She was twenty six, she delivered food for a living, and she hadn't wanted to come. Her mother had arranged this. Her mother was sixty three, on dialysis three days a week, and afraid of dying while her daughter still ate every meal standing up. So Gemma had put on the one dress she owned, disliked the man in the photograph immediately, and come anyway, because politeness was the only thing left she could still afford. At quarter past seven, a man in a dark coat crossed the dining room and sat down across from her the way a man sits in a chair he has used before. He didn't look at the menu. He turned his phone face down, straightened the knife beside his plate, and waited. Gemma folded her hands. "You're at the wrong table." The man's eyes came up slowly. "Am I." "You are. This table's reserved for a Preston Kerr, and he's already fifteen minutes late." She picked up her phone, opened the photo her mother had sent her that morning, and turned the screen toward him. "You're not him. He's uglier." The man actually looked. He studied the photograph the way other men study a contract, for longer than the joke required, and something moved behind his eyes that Gemma couldn't read. Behind the hostess stand, a young woman who had started that week went white and didn't move. Orlando Vaughn was thirty eight years old. He owned the freight that moved through the port of Providence and the men who moved it, and for twenty years nobody in this city had told him to get up from anything. He stayed where he was. But why would one wrong table, on a night when Orlando Vaughn had already agreed to marry another woman, end with a delivery driver paying for his dinner in cash and refusing to sign her name to anything at all?
