If I asked you to describe War Thunder in one word, what would your answer be? Would it be positive, explaining why you play the game? Or, would it be negative, sharing your frustrations? Or maybe something in between?
Well, I asked 1023 people to describe War Thunder in one word over the course of the last few months. I have meticulously gathered, sorted, and graphed this data, into one ginormous spreadsheet for you.
Now, the first question anyone should have is “how did you go about getting this data?”. Well, the process was a lot simpler than you would think. Firstly, I would say some variation of ‘describe war thunder in a single word’ in ALL chat. As the answers came in, I would insert them into my spreadsheet. From there, I would assign each answer a category, and a root word, to help make sure the data is as accurate as possible.
However, a problem with this is the same person answering multiple times. If they answered multiple times in one game, their last answer was recorded. But also, there’s a high chance of a player being in multiple games with me, and answering multiple times that way. For ones that said that they had already answered, I didn’t count them. But, there surely are at least a couple answers that are from duplicate players, so just keep that in mind.
Macrodata is defined as large-scale statistics compiled from individual data points. They represent summaries of groups of statistics, rather than just individual entries. Microdata, in contrast, is the individual entries into the data. Now, ‘why am I explaining this to you?’, you may ask. Well, there are 3 different layers of data here.
Firstly, we have the microdata. This is the raw answers from the players. From there, we have the first level of Macrodata, the root words. A good example of this is the root word of ‘hell’. These are all separate answers given to me from players. ‘Hell, hellhole, hellraiser, and purgatory’. In the root word macrodata, these are all counted just as the word ‘Hell’. Another, less extreme example, would be ‘femboy, femboi, and femboys’. They are all counted under ‘femboy’.
From this level of Macrodata we have another level. These are broad categories, being ‘negative, positive, neutral, racial, gaijin, and sexual’. Now if you had to guess, which of these do you think would have the most answers? Well, I’ll tell you in a second, but first, if you had to pick a singular word to be the most answered, what would it be?
You would think, out of the 170 000 words in the modern English language, there would be no standout word in the results. However, you would be incredibly mistaken, as the most common word is ‘pain’, And it's not the most common by a small margin. It is by far the most answered word, whether you play air or ground. 123 out of 1024 responses were the word ‘pain’. That means, on average, one out of every 8 players answered with it.
You’d also naturally think that there would be a large difference in the words used in air and ground, but pain takes the number one slot for both. The difference between air and ground is very small, with ‘pain’ taking up 11.7% of air and 12.4% of ground. In fact, for air, the second most common word is ‘shit’, with 6.3%. This means that ‘pain’ is at least two times more likely to be said than any other specific word.
But why specifically pain? Why not ‘bad’, ‘broken’, ‘boring’, ‘awful’, or any other negative word? Why do players go straight to a word that is normally used to describe a physical sensation? Could it be that War Thunder is a kind of Sisyphean task?
Out of the 1024 responses, there are only 4 that mention Sisyphus, making up 0.4% of the data. This may not seem like much, but the ancient Greek tale of Sisyphus sums up War Thunder perfectly.
