Manali, But Without the Crowds - Our Honest Take

Everyone drives straight through to Manali. We stopped 22 km short, in Naggar, and spent our days in a village where kath-kuni homes are still standing and still lived in. Naggar was the capital of the Kullu kingdom long before Manali existed. It sits halfway between Kullu and Manali, about 300m above the valley floor, and almost nobody stops here. We stayed in a sustainable Airbnb, walked to [VILLAGE NAME] — a village that still builds and lives the old way — and did very little else. This is that week. 🏔️ WHAT IS KATH-KUNI? A building technique from the western Himalaya: alternating layers of long timber beams and dry stone, interlocked without cement or mortar. The wood absorbs movement, which makes these houses genuinely earthquake-resistant — some have stood for centuries. Almost nobody builds this way anymore. Concrete is cheaper and faster, and a generation of these homes is quietly disappearing. 🏡 WHERE WE STAYED NORTH— a sustainable Airbnb in Naggar ₹8K per night It is definitely worth the experience, but I won't stay more than a night. 📍 WHAT WE DID • Naggar Castle — 500+ years old, built by Raja Sidh Singh, kath-kuni throughout. Entry ₹30 • Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery — the Russian painter's home from the late 1920s until 1947, 1.5 km from the castle. Entry ₹50, 9am–5pm, closed Mondays • RUMSU— the kath-kuni village we walked to • Mostly: slow mornings, chai, and walking 🚗 HOW TO REACH NAGGAR 22 km from Manali, 22 km from Kullu — Naggar sits between them on the left bank of the Beas By bus: get down at Patlikuhl on the main highway, then a taxi to Naggar (~₹500) or a local bus Nearest airport: Bhuntar (KUU) From Delhi: overnight Volvo to Kullu/Patlikuhl, then local transport 🎒 WORTH KNOWING • Naggar is on the old road — quieter, slower, and steeper than the highway side • Best months: October to June • If you go into the villages, ask before photographing homes. People live there; it isn't a heritage site • Carry cash — card acceptance is patchy once you're off the main road If you know of other villages where kath-kuni is still standing, tell me in the comments.
