Do your flap heels fall apart when you try to put them into a combination? This exercise is designed to fix that by mastering rhythm switching and smooth transitions. ------------------------------------- WHAT IS THIS PRACTICE COMBINATION? This short combination is designed to make your flap heels dance-ready by combining them with other beginner-level steps. It is specifically built to improve your skills in key areas: Works Both Sides: The combination drills flap heels on both the right and left feet. Drills Rhythm Switching: You'll bounce back and forth between straight and swing rhythms, making you proficient at both. Focus on Sound: The exercise is done without music so you can clearly hear your sounds and practice at any speed. ------------------------------------- COMMON PROBLEMS WITH THIS EXERCISE Incorrect Rhythm: The biggest challenge is executing the correct rhythm. Dancers typically get the swing rhythm right but rush the second sound of the flap heel straight rhythm. Awkward Transition: Another common issue is a clumsy or long pause when connecting the first half of the combination to the second half. ------------------------------------- HOW TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS Incorrect Straight Rhythm: To fix the rushed second sound, focus on lifting the brush up out of the floor during the flap, instead of shoving the flap down into the floor. Awkward Transition: Method 1: Think Ahead. In your mind, start thinking about the first step of the second half before it begins, so your body is ready. Method 2: Isolate and Repeat. Practice just the transition from the first half to the second half slowly, over and over, until you can do it correctly 5 times in a row. ------------------------------------- WHY THIS PRACTICE COMBINATION MATTERS It's Realistic: Using steps in the context of a combination is how tap dancing works. If you can't execute them in combinations, you will find tap difficult and frustrating. It Builds Your Brain: Every time you learn a new combination, you get better at connecting different steps together. Once this becomes second nature, learning new choreography becomes easy and fun. ------------------------------------- HOW TO GET FASTER Practice with Quality: Repetition is key, but make sure you maintain a clean sound and rhythm. Don't sacrifice quality for speed. Keep Movements Small: Smaller, more efficient movements close to the floor are much faster. ------------------------------------- TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - Introduction 0:13 - Combination Breakdown 4:43 - Runthrough From the Top 6:12 - Runthrough From the Top Again 6:46 - More Combinations 7:06 - Ultimate Teacher Package ------------------------------------- Which aspect of this video helped you the most?
