Are San Francisco's cable cars merely a famous tourist ride, or are they still worth building part of your day around? In this Mariandy Quest, you will see what the ride is really like, visit the free Cable Car Museum inside the working powerhouse, and discover the stories of Andrew Smith Hallidie, the founder, and Friedel Klussmann, the civic organizer who led the 1947 fight to save the Powell lines. We compare the Powell-Hyde, Powell-Mason, and California routes while covering fares, queues, boarding, hills, seating, weather, accessibility, and ways to enjoy the experience at a more comfortable pace. The outing may be especially rewarding if you enjoy engineering, California history, urban scenery, or transportation nostalgia. However, the cars do not have accessible boarding, and waits can change the experience. Come along for a realistic look at one of San Francisco's most distinctive traditions and find inspiration for your own easygoing adventure. We’re Maria and Andy, a couple discovering what adventure looks like now, through easygoing, age-appropriate hikes, travels, and everyday moments that prove curiosity doesn’t retire. We’ve created something special to accompany your own adventures. It’s an eBook titled Hidden Gems of California, featuring our favorite small towns, hikes, golf courses, and off-the-beaten-path adventures. It’s available for any contribution. Every download helps us keep the journey going.
