From Akabane to Asagaya, we explored the history of Japan’s postwar housing estates by Brompton. This Brompton Open Ride, “Cycling Through the History of UR Housing Estates,” took us on a journey through several iconic housing developments in Tokyo. We started at Akabane Station and passed a location believed to have appeared in the music video for Elephant Kashimashi’s “Sakura no Hana Maiagaru Michi wo.” Our first major stop was the UR Machi to Kurashi no Museum, where we spent a fascinating 90 minutes learning about the history of Japanese public housing—from the early days of postwar housing to the development of modern housing estates. From there, we passed Kirigaoka Gymnasium, built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, before stopping for lunch at Rack, a Showa-era karaoke snack bar tucked away in Kirigaoka Chuo Shopping Street. We enjoyed a wonderfully nostalgic, generously sized Western-style lunch surrounded by the atmosphere of old Tokyo. Our ride then continued past the Shimura Ichirizuka milestone and through Hasune Housing Estate, which had also appeared in the museum’s exhibition. We made a brief visit to Takashimadaira Housing Estate, once said to be the largest housing development of its kind in the East, before continuing by Brompton to Nogata to take a look from outside at a surviving Star House that is still in use today. Finally, we headed to the site of the former Asagaya Housing Estate, now home to Proud City Asagaya, searching for traces of the housing estate that once stood there. It was a ride through architecture, history, food, and everyday life—connecting the past and present of Tokyo on our Brompton. We hope you enjoy riding through Tokyo’s history with us.
