(If you want to skip all the tutorial/attract sequences and jump right into the gameplay, you can skip past the first 3 minutes of this video) Welcome to the next Free Play Long Play, where I play a long (2+ hour) game from start to finish. Or attempt to, as following my prior effort to do so with the "endless" arcade classic "Gauntlet", it's on to the sequel, the just-as-legendary "Gauntlet 2". Released in arcades in 1986 by Atari, Gauntlet 2 is a top-down RPG/fantasy/maze game for 1-4 players. The gameplay is the same as Gauntlet but with some notable differences: There are 100 new unique levels. Level designs can also be rotated 2 or 4 ways. Only the first 5 levels stay the same (except for rotation/flipping) before the "randomizer" starts on Level 6. There is only one warp chance at the start-on Level 1 you have an opportunity to skip ahead to Level 6. Players are now free to choose any of the 4 characters with no restrictions, with player slots by color: Player 1 is Red, Player 2 is Blue, Player 3 is Yellow, Player 4 is Green. There are 5 new enemies: Super Sorcerers (appear/disappear randomly and shoot fireballs), Acid Puddles (move randomly and deal huge damage on contact), Mugger (steals 100 Health), It (monsters go after the player who is It, you can "tag" another player to make them It), and Dragons (a boss of sorts-shoots fireballs and, at close range, fire breath that will kill quickly. Takes many hits to kill. Drops treasure and a powerup potion). Dragons will not appear until either at least Level 12 or after your first Treasure Room. Thief & Mugger will appear multiple times per level on later levels. Thief AI is improved and he will try and dodge your shots. Enemy movement patterns are more varied and, on certain levels, certain enemies have greatly increased speed. Force Fields & Stun Tiles have been added. Force Fields do damage if touched when activated, Stun Tiles freeze you in place for about a second. Traps can appear multiple times on levels. Secret Rooms can be accessed. This requires both luck and performing of a particular task on certain levels. I managed to get one Secret Room in this playthrough. On some levels, the Exit will move. On some levels, all walls or trap-affected walls are invisible. Some walls can be moved. Some non-breakable walls can be destroyed and may reveal items or even a Death. New powerups: Reflective Shots (shots bounce off walls up to 3 times, lasts until you finish that level), Super Shots (10 shots-destroys all enemies in its path except Dragon, Death & Acid Puddles, damages players, also destroys food, potions & treasure), Repulsiveness (enemies will run away from you), Transportability (touching a wall or item causes you to transport to the opposite side in the direction you are moving, can actually remove walls), Invulnerability (can't be damaged by enemies or stunned by Stun Tiles, but Health decreases faster). Also added are Mystery Food bottles with a "?", which give you a random amount of health (25-200) and Poison (food or potions with a skull & crossbones)-taking this makes you dizzy & controls act weird for a short time plus you lose 50 Health, but if you shoot it instead all monsters slow down for a short time. Finally, there are Fake Exits in some levels. They look like real Exits but don't take you to the next level. The same level-clearing cheats return from the original: Stand still and don't attack or use magic for 30 seconds to open all doors (without using keys), or for 200 seconds to turn all walls into Exits. The goal of this playthrough was to attempt to play every unique level once before they began to repeat, when I felt I reached that point I continued until the next game over (the game ends when all players' Health reaches 0). My experience revealed there are indeed 100+ unique levels, with at least 3 returning from the original with a few tweaks. I had no idea as to theories of how many unique levels there really are, but after this playthrough my theory is there are 103 unique levels in this game, excluding Treasure & Secret Rooms, although it officially is endless. The magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly ranked this the #3 arcade game of all time in 1997. The game was released for various home computers in 1987-1988 by U.S. Gold, for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989 by Mindscape (one of the first NES games to support the Satellite & Four Score accessories, which expanded the system's capacity from 2 players to 4 for some games-this version also referred to Fake Exits as Dummy Exits instead), for PC & Game Boy in 1990 and for PlayStation 2, Xbox & GameCube in 2004 as part of "Midway Arcade Treasures 2".
